Dartmouth Writing Program: Writing the Music Paper
This site provides an excellent overview of the many facets of writing
about music, including some same papers (including a "historical" paper,
as we are doing in some respects with Essay #3). The "Writing Advice"
section is also helpful and valuable
Harvard Writing Project -- First Nights: Writing About Music
This is actually the writing prompt of an assignment at Harvard (hey --
they're writing about music too!), and provides some excellent examples
of what to listen for when we are interpreting musical texts, as
well as strategies for writing with both technical precision and
metaphor. This is possibly more helpful for the final research project, but is worth considering now as we work toward that project.
Writing In Music (Aaron Copland School of Music - Queens College)
This site is very comprehensive and touches on almost every
aspect of writing about music that you could think of, although -- to be honest -- their
examples of thesis statements are not quite as strong as I'd like to see
from you.
